Данное пособие – первая книга авторского курса разговорной грамматики современного английского языка. Все упражнения пособия основаны на повседневно используемой лексике и направлены на развитие навыков говорения. Большинство упражнений и все мини-тесты снабжены ключами, поэтому пособие можно использовать для самостоятельного изучения материала. Книга предназначена для широкого круга людей, интересующихся современным английским языком: от учащихся средней школы до специалистов, изучающих методику преподавания иностранных языков.

УРОВЕНЬ 1

Спряжение глагола to be в настоящем неопределенном времени

Утвердительная форма (обратите внимание на сокращения, характерные для разговорной речи):

I am a dentist. = I’m a dentist. — Я дантист.

You are a dentist. = You’re a dentist. — Ты дантист.

He is a dentist. = He’s a dentist. — Он дантист.

She is a dentist. = She’s a dentist. — Она дантист.

It is a dentist. = It’s a dentist. — Это дантист.

We are dentists. = We’re dentists. — Мы дантисты.

You are dentists. = You’re dentists. — Вы дантисты.

They are dentists. = They’re dentists. — Они дантисты.

Вопросительная форма (обратите внимание на порядок слов в вопросах):

Am I a dentist? — Я дантист?

Are you a dentist? — Ты дантист?

Is he a dentist? — Он дантист?

Is she a dentist? — Она дантист?

Is it a dentist? — Это дантист?

Are we dentists? — Мы дантисты?

Отрицательная форма (обратите внимание на сокращения в отрицательных предложениях, характерные для разговорной речи):

Когда глагол to be выступает в предложении в роли смыслового глагола или глагола-связки, он выполняет следующие функции:

а) указывает на существование человека или предмета, на профессию человека, его национальность и семейное положение, а также на то, к какому виду / роду принадлежит предмет. В таких случаях после глагола to be (not) следует существительное — зачастую с неопределенным артиклем, если это имя нарицательное единственного числа. Артикль не употребляется перед существительными во множественном числе, именами собственными, а также если перед существительным стоит притяжательное местоимение (my, your и т.д.) или притяжательная конструкция (Jack’s, Kate’s и т.д.).

I’m a driver. — Я водитель.

Jane isn’t British, she’s Australian. — Джейн не англичанка, а австралийка.

They aren’t students, they’re teachers. — Они не студенты, а учителя.

It’s not a supermarket, it’s a bank. — Это не супермаркет, а банк.

It isn’t John’s house, it’s my house. — Это мой дом, а не Джека.

Обратите внимание, что если перед существительным стоит одно или несколько прилагательных, а также наречие, относящееся к прилагательному, то неопределенный артикль ставится после глагола to be (not) перед всей группой прилагательных или группой наречие + прилагательное.

It’s a long red dress. — Это длинное красное платье.

It’s a very old souvenir from Peru. — Это очень старый сувенир из Перу.

Jenny is a tall, blond, good-looking young woman. — Дженни высокая, светловолосая, красивая молодая женщина.

б) описывает человека или предмет. В таких случаях после глагола to be (not) следует имя прилагательное.

Are you tired? — Ты устал?

Mark is sad. — Марк опечален.

She isn’t old. — Она не стара.

We’re hungry. — Мы голодны.

с) дает дополнительную информацию о человеке или предмете. В таких случаях после to be (not) зачастую следует существительное с предлогом.

He’s in the kitchen. — Он на кухне.

They’re under the bridge. — Они находятся под мостом.

We’re not from Japan, we’re from Korea. — Мы не из Японии, а из Кореи.

В отличие от общих вопросов, требующих ответов «да» или «нет» (Are you a teacher? — Yes, I am / No, I’m not), специальные вопросы задают, чтобы получить дополнительную и уточняющую информацию. В специальных вопросах используются вопросительные слова или словосочетания.

Вопросительные слова: what — что, who — кто, when — когда, where — где, why — почему, which — который, whose — чей, whom — кого, кому, how — как.

Вопросительные словосочетания: what + сущ. — какой (what book, what day); which of + cущ. / местоим. — кто / который из (which of you, which of the students); how + прил. / наречие (how much, how long, how old).

Специальные вопросы с глаголом to be строятся по следующей схеме:

Вопрос. слово / словосочетание + to be + сущ. / мест. (+…)?
