Эта книга очень неординарна по своей структуре: здесь представлены и британский, и американский варианты диалогов на русском языке, поэтому, кроме всего прочего, учащиеся смогут почувствовать разницу между британским и американским вариантами английского языка. Можно согласиться с автором этой книги, который заметил ниже, что «…хотя англичане и американцы говорят на одном языке, они это делают совершенно по-разному».

Как пройти на вокзал?

— Извините, как пройти на вокзал?

— У нас здесь девять вокзалов, вам какой нужен?

— Я не знаю.

— Куда вы едете?

— В Бруклин.

— Вам надо на вокзал на 21 улице. Это лучше подземкой. Станция за углом направо, ярдов двести. Вон там.

— Спасибо.

— Хорошей дороги.

In American English:

— Excuse me, would you by any chance know how to get to the train station?

— There are nine train stations here, which one are you looking for?

— I am not exactly sure. Could you help me, by any chance, please?

— Where do you need to get to?

— Brooklyn.

— You need the 21^st street station then. You’d be better off getting there by the subway. The nearest subway station is around the corner to the right, over there.

— Thank you very much!

— Not at all, you’re welcome.

In American English:

— Excuse me, do you know where the nearest drugstore around here is?

— Over there. Better on foot. It’s not too far, within walking distance. About fifteen minutes or so from here. Go straight down this street here and when you get to that high-rise building over there, take a right.

— Thank you very much!

— You’re welcome.

Где здесь плавательный бассейн?

— Извините! Здесь где-то плавательный бассейн должен быть, вы не знаете?

— Здесь два плавательных бассейна: один по этой улице, примерно с полмили, второй вот по этой улице, примерно на таком же расстоянии. Первый бассейн длиной двести футов, и там, говорят, вода морская, и там народу немного, но он дорогой. А вот тот, что по этой улице, он в длину там дорожки по сто футов, там всегда много купальщиков — в основном это подростки — и он намного дешевле. Там и аквапарк есть, но туда вход отдельный.

— Спасибо большое!

In British English:

— Actually there are two swimming pools around here: one is over there, along this street, it’s about half a mile, I think, and the other one is over there, go along that street, again it’s about half a mile walk. The first one has swimming paths two hundred feet long and they say that the water in the pools is real sea water. There aren’t many swimmers there and it’s very expensive. The other one over there along that street has swimming paths a hundred feet long, it’s always crowded, mainly by teenagers, but it’s much cheaper. There is a water park there as well, but then you have to go through a different entrance.

— Thank you very much!

— You’re welcome.

In American English:

— Excuse me! I thought that there was a swimming pool around here somewhere. Would you happen to know where, exactly?

— Actually there are two swimming pools around here: one is over there, along this street, maybe about half a mile from here or so, and the other one is down that street over there, again about half a mile, something like that. The first one is two hundred feet long and has actual salt water in it. There are not many people there and it’s very expensive. The other one over there along that street is a hundred feet long, and it’s always crowded. It is mainly teenagers there but it’s much cheaper though. There is a water park there as well, but through separate entrance.

— Thank you very much!

— You’re welcome.

Как проехать на поле Баер?

— Извините! Мне надо на поле Баер, там сегодня годовщина Битвы за Аламо, как туда можно проехать?

— Можно на поезде от вокзала Пенн, там есть состав, который идет до станции «Аламеда». Поезд этот, правда, ходит всего два раза в день, утром и вечером. И еще от станции до музея Битвы за Аламо километров пять — или пешком, или на автобусе. Автобус там ходит не очень часто.

— Мне говорили, что можно на автобусе прямо до музея.

— Можно и на автобусе, тоже от вокзала Пенн. Автобус идет до музея Битвы за Аламо, это очень удобно.

— А как доехать до вокзала Пенн?

— На подземке. Выходить вам нужно на станции «вокзал Ренн».

— Спасибо.

— By the Underground. You have to get off at Penn Station.

In American English:

— Yes?

— A-a, yes. You can get there by train from Penn Station. There is a direct train to the Alameda station but the train only goes there twice a day, in the morning and in the late afternoon. — Have a good journey.

In American English:

— Excuse me! I need to get to San Diego, to Chula Vista, to be precise. Could you please tell me which train that I would need to take?

— It doesn’t leave from the railway station, it’s better by bus, from Oceanside Bus Station. The bus goes all the way to Chula Vista, via Carlsbad. The bus station you need is not far from the subway station «Eastern District».

— Is the nearest subway station far from here?

— It’s pretty close, around the corner, in fact. Just over there, see?

— Yes. Thank you very much!

— Have a safe trip.

— Автовокзал вон там, за мостом налево. У нас, вообще-то еще Южный автовокзал есть. А этот, который за мостом налево — Центральный. Вам куда надо ехать?

— Есть. И белый есть, и бурый есть. Бурого и покормить можно. Посетители обычно покупают печенье вон в том магазине, прямо у выхода из подземного перехода. Скажите продавщице, что это для медведя, и она даст вам его любимое печенье.

— Получается, это ручной медведь?

— Да, получается так. Он раньше в цирке работал, когда был помоложе, ездил на велосипеде. А сейчас состарился немного. Но все равно, через забор не перелезайте, потому что неизвестно, что у него на уме. Там еще ручной слоненок есть, вот его можно и погладить, и за хобот подержать, и покататься на нем.

— Спасибо!

— Всего хорошего.

— In the Zoo, of course.

— Yes, you’re lucky, there are. Even more than one. They have both Brown Bear and Polar Bear. As for the Brown one, it can be treated by something delicious. You know, visitors usually buy some cookies in the foodstuff shop, which is next to the underground passage. Tell the salesgirl that you want to buy something for the Bear, and she’ll give you his favorite cookies.

— Turns out it’s a tamed bear?

— Seems to be, yeah. Years ago, it worked in a Circus, used to ride a bike. Then it got too old to do all those tricks. But anyway be careful and don’t climb over the fence, you never know what might be on it’s mind. There’s also a tamed baby elephant there. You can actually patt his trunk and you can even get a ride on his back!

In American English:
